Pray & Prepare for the Mass

August 31, 2025 | 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading, Sirach encourages his child to conduct all his affairs with humility. In the second reading, the author writes, You have not approached that which could be touched…no, you have approached Mount Zion. In the Gospel, while dining at the home of a Pharisee, Jesus tells a parable about a wedding banquet. He says that the one who humbles himself by taking the lowest place will be exalted.

September 7, 2025 | 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading, the author asks who among mortal human beings could know God’s wisdom without help from God. In the second reading, Paul urges Philemon to accept Onesimus on his behalf no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a brother. In the Gospel, Jesus says that anyone who wants to follow him must carry his own cross. He encourages his listeners to consider the cost of discipleship.

September 14, 2025 | Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

In the first reading, the people complain against God and Moses, so the Lord punishes them by sending a plague of saraph serpents. Then God heals his people of the plague by instructing Moses to make a serpent and mount it on a pole. Anyone who looks at the serpent will be healed. In the second reading, Paul writes of Christ who emptied himself, becoming obedient even to death. In the Gospel, Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man must be lifted up like the serpent in the desert so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
